UM EL FAROUD
Description
Um el Faroud was a Libyan oil tanker which suffered damage in an explosion at the dry docks in Valletta in 1995. Nine dockyard workers lost their lives in that tragic event. Three and half years later it was scuttled at the Wied iz-Zurrieq on the south coast of Malta.
The wreck is overall 110 m long and 16m wide, resting on a sandy bottom at the depths of 15 m (funnel) to 36 m (propeller) approx. 150 m south-west from the shore. All doors and windows had been removed and even some extra entry/exit holes had been cut so it's an immense playground which offers lots of penetration possibilities for experienced wreck divers. Um El Faroud broke in two during a heavy storm in winter 2005-2006. The wreck is marker with a big yellow surface marker where we can attached the training buoy for some depth training up to 30 m.

Note
The wreck is very popular with scuba divers so we need to think about them and behave accordingly. Sometimes strong currents of different directions at different depths might occur. For this reason, Um el Fahroud has claimed most lives from all local Maltese dive spots
