FREEDIVING SAFARI - EGYPT 2019 (3/7)

Drift freediving at SS Dunraven

In the morning we moved to Beacon Rock to the wreck of SS Dunraven. The Dunraven was a 85 m long British sail/steam cargo ship which sank on the southern side of the reef on 22nd April 1876 on it’s way from the UK to Bombay, loaded with timber and cotton. It rests in the depth of 25-30 m.

As Tom Ka joined the dark side and went diving on scuba, another Darth Vader’s stormtrooper Vojta was my buddy for that dive.

Nice, clear and warm water again, the visibility was 30+ but what surprised us was a very strong current. We wanted to take the video of a drift dive with Martin but as we didn’t expect such a strong current, we didn’t plan it in advance so we were struggling with the communication in the strong current and we didn’t manage to take any usable video.

As Martin and his buddy left shortly after to explore the other parts of the wreck and there was no one else crazy enough to go down and up, I had some more dives taking selfie-videos on a drift dives. It was challenging but it was awesome. I enjoyed it. I loved it. In fact, I was like a small kid on a chute. Drifting down the current, sprinting up, drifting down, sprinting back up and again and again and again, not willing to stop until we were the last buddy team in the water and eventually were pulled out into a zodiac… Actually, I think that Vojta hated me for that as it was really exhausting. I’m sorry for that, buddy, hope we're good now :)

After this dive we sailed to the most famous wreck in the world - SS Thistlegorm. But this for another story.

Stay tuned.
