MGARR IX-XINI

Description

Mgarr ix-Xini and Il-Kantra are two neighboring inlets in the south of Gozo. The sandy bottom of both inlets is up to 15 m but outside the bays it goes down to 25 m and further out the bottom quickly drops to depth 40+ m. There are 3 caves interesting for freediving. First one is Dragon cave. This cave we can swim all the way in and out on the surface. The ceiling is very low so we need to take care of the swell. When the swell is big it pushes air out of the cave under the ceiling which resembles the breath of the dragon (hence its name). The max depth of the cave is 10 m, we can surface and breathe inside and we can go in & out both underwater or on the surface. Another cave, Il-Kantra Cave, is between both inlets. The only way in & out is underwater, the swim is about 5 m deep and 15 m long. You can find 2 air pockets inside, the air quality is usually good. The last cave, Ta'Cenc Cave, is outside of the bay on the right side after approx 100 m swim. The only way in & out is underwater, the swim is about 8 m deep and 15-20m long. We can surface and breathe inside but it's pitch black inside so this cave is not recommended for beginners (for the mental aspect). Check out the video guide at the bottom of this page.
